HMN Tech unveils prototype 32-fiber-pair submarine repeater for petabit transmission

Sept. 30, 2021

HMN Tech of Tianjin, China, says it has developed a prototype 32-fiber-pair submarine repeater that will support petabit-level transmissions. The repeater can be used in high-fiber-count and space-division multiplexing (SDM) architectures, according to the company. HMN Tech hopes to mark the commercial release of a fully qualified product next year.

The repeater leverages improved circuit design and a proprietary pump-sharing structure to reduce voltage drop and power consumption. HMN Tech adds that mechanical and structural design advances as well as optical-electric component integration also has enabled them to double the fiber count of the company’s 16-fiber-pair repeaters. The repeater will support direct, long-distance, low-latency transoceanic connectivity while offering network flexibility and fiber-pair independence, HMN Tech expects.

“After recently delivering the world’s first 16-fiber-pair repeater system, HMN Tech is proud to launch the next-generation 32-fiber-pair submarine repeater prototype. It breaks all existing industry limitations and will provide a robust, qualified alternative for our customers,” stated Ma Yanfeng, executive vice president at the company. “HMN Tech strives to provide innovative submersible products and solutions to further unlock new business opportunities and commercial applications, ultimately achieving our customers’ business success.”
