POET Technologies to supply multi-engine 100G CWDM4 and 100G LR4 devices to ADVA

ADVA, whom POET described as a lead customer, will use the multi-engine transmit and receive chips in its MicroMux Quattro pluggable module, which supplies the functionality of four independent 100G interfaces into a single QSFP-DD housing.

POET Technologies Inc. says it has developed and will supply multi-engine 100G CWDM4 and 100G LR4 chip-on-board devices to ADVA Optical Networking SE. ADVA, whom POET described as a lead customer, will use the multi-engine transmit and receive chips in its MicroMux Quattro pluggable module, which supplies the functionality of four independent 100G interfaces in a single QSFP-DD housing.

The multi-engine chips accommodate multiple instances of 100GBASE-CWDM4 functionality for 2-km applications and 100GBASE-LR4 for 10-km applications. The devices integrate transmit and receive functions within a single optical engine. The engines leverage POET’s Optical Interposer platform, which enables hybrid integration of lasers and photodiodes, monolithic integration of optical mux and demux, and the passive alignment of components (see “POET Technologies optical interposer platform for electronic and optical component co-packaging in single MCM unveiled”).

POET states the 100GBASE-LR4 optical engines are the first implementation of chip-on-board devices for the 100G LR4 market. The company adds that it has successfully demonstrated 10-km operation of its 100G LR4 optical engines in its Shenzhen Lab. It expects to ship beta samples to ADVA this quarter, with production targeted in the second half of 2023.

“We are excited to work with ADVA and to enable a high-density platform with a large market potential,” said Vivek Rajgarhia, president and general manager of POET. “POET’s Optical Interposer platform provides a high level of photonic integration to provide unique solutions in miniature form factors. We believe that our wafer-scale integration platform provides ADVA with compelling solutions that are well aligned with their current and future products.”

The MicroMux Quattro is the latest addition to ADVA’s MicroMux portfolio (see, for example, “ADVA offers MicroMux Edge BiDi pluggable for access networks” and “ADVA expands MicroMux pluggable multiplexer line for edge and core networks”). “ADVA’s MicroMux Quattro brings the industry’s smallest aggregation technology all the way to the network core. Engineered as a standard-compliant plug in a QSFP-DD form factor, it fits into a 400-Gbps socket, enabling it to meet legacy needs,” explained Ross Saunders, general manager of optical engines at ADVA. “This innovative pluggable solution packs the functionality of four independent 100-Gbps interfaces or two independent 200-Gbps interfaces into a single QSFP-DD housing.

“POET’s unique design of its optical engines with hybrid integration of optical chips and monolithically integrated mux and demux enables us to deliver industry-leading products in a small form factor that is scalable to high-volume production as well as to higher data rates, such as 1.6 Tbps and 3.2 Tbps, thereby enabling much higher bandwidth in a pluggable form factor,” Saunders added.

On an FAQ on POET’s website, the company stated that “The two companies have a good working relationship and discussions regarding additional products are on-going.” ADVA merged with ADTRAN in July 2022 (see "ADTRAN, ADVA to merge for metro to access play").
