AEPONYX unveils tunable laser portfolio

AEPONYX Inc. says it has expanded its product line to include high-performance tunable lasers for DWDM and PON applications, including tunable transceivers for NG-PON2 and G.9804.1 networks as well as coherent modules.

Philippe Babin, CEO of AEPONYX, noted that the NG-PON2 space is particularly challenging. Nevertheless, the company has developed optical subassembly and transceiver technology for such multiwavelength PON networks. AEPONYX developed a T-DBR EML with semiconductor optical amplifier as part of the project. The laser can support burst-mode transmission via 10G NRZ presently, with 25G NRZ and 50G PAM4 compatibility on the horizon.

“High performance tunable lasers are not readily available on the market and are the key subcomponent in products that find or will find applications in growing markets. It was a multiyear project to develop our lasers and we are making them available to industry partners as we want to push product development and innovation for next generation sensor markets and in our traditional telecom and datacom markets,” commented Babin.

“Our hybrid integration and photonic wire bonding capabilities allow us to sell the lasers fully integrated onto our Silicon Nitride (SiN) platform for telecom, datacom, automotive, life science, and quantum markets or we can sell as bare dies to select customers,” Babin added.

Babin said that his company’s lasers have found application in NG-PON2 ONUs and will be able to support transceivers for networks based on CableLab’s C-PON specifications. The lasers feature fast tuning time, extended reach, high output power, an integrated shutter, and low spectral excursion, he added.
