Optoscribe sampling OptoCplrLT for coupling fiber to silicon photonic PICs

Use of the OpotCplrLT will overcome the challenges inherent in coupling fiber to SiPh photonic integrated circuits (PICs) and enable high-volume automated assembly, the company says.

Optoscribe Ltd., which specializes in 3D glass-based integrated photonics components, says its OptoCplrLT monolithic glass chip for low-loss coupling to silicon photonics (SiPh) grating couplers has reached the sampling stage. Use of the OpotCplrLT will overcome the challenges inherent in coupling fiber to SiPh photonic integrated circuits (PICs) and enable high-volume automated assembly, the company says.

The OptoCplrLT features low-loss light-turning curved mirrors formed in the glass to direct the light to or from the SiPh grating couplers. The glass device obviates the need for bend-tolerant fiber, the company asserts. The device is approximately 1 mm high and 1.5 mm with cap. Optoscribe adds that the OptoCplrLT is also compatible with industry-standard materials and processes. For example, the glass chip has a coefficient of thermal expansion matched to the silicon chip, according to the company, which enables maximized performance.
