Lumen brings 400G services to Europe

March 21, 2023
The service provider says it so far has enabled more than half of its intercity network footprint in Europe to support 400G wavelength services, as well as 70 data centers and two transatlantic routes on the Grace Hopper and Dunant submarine networks.

Lumen Technologies (NYSE: LUMN) says it is bringing 400G capabilities to 50 markets its European network connects. The service provider says it so far has enabled more than half of its intercity network footprint in Europe to support 400G wavelength services, as well as 70 data centers and two transatlantic routes on the Grace Hopper and Dunant submarine networks.

The company says it plans to bring 400G to other European intercity links this year and beyond, with extensions toward the metro edge. Where this further deployment will occur will depend on customer demand. Lumen says it has seen significant interest in 400G capabilities where they are currently available from enterprises, government agencies, hyperscalers, and wholesale customers who seek high-bandwidth interconnections between their data centers and the public cloud.

Overall, Lumen’s EMEA network spans approximately 42,000 route miles of fiber, connecting to more than 2,500 on-net buildings and 540 public and private third-party data centers.

"We are continually innovating our network infrastructure solutions to support our customers' business growth," said Annette Murphy, president, Lumen EMEA and APAC. "In an era of digital acceleration, our next-generation wavelength network supports businesses' rapidly increasing high-bandwidth needs. This enhanced capacity helps customers scale quickly and securely, to enable a digital journey that can take them well into the future."

The company recently made a similar announcement regarding its U.S. network (see “Lumen to add 6 million fiber miles on intercity network”).
