GlobalConnect achieves single-wavelength 1.2-Tbps via Nokia PSE-6s
Nokia says that GlobalConnect has taken the recently unveiled PSE-6s super-coherent DSP out for a spin and achieved record 1.2-Tbps transmission rates on the service provider’s live optical network in Europe. The 1.2-Tbps trial covered 118 km using 150 GHz of spectrum; a second 800-Gbps trial stretched 2019 km.
Nokia introduced the sixth-generation PSE-6s last week (see “Nokia unveils PSE-6s super-coherent optical engine for 1.2-Tbps to 2.4-Tbps applications”). The company asserts that the new coherent DSP and its 1.2-Tbps capabilities can save up to 50% in network total cost of ownership and up to a 60% reduction in network power consumption versus the company’s previous coherent DSP generation (which GlobalConnect also trialed shortly after its release; see “GlobalConnect runs 600G trial using Nokia PSE-V super coherent optics”).
The demonstrations leveraged GlobalConnect’s Metro Data Center Interconnect infrastructure. “This trial highlights GlobalConnect’s commitment to offering scalable and flexible high-bandwidth services across our Nordic backbone network,” commented Martin Højriis Kristensen, head of market and operations at GlobalConnect. “We are pleased to validate Nokia’s latest generation of PSE-6 super coherent optics as an important enabler of these continuous network upgrades, seamlessly operating over our live network with existing coherent channels.”
“With world data volumes expected to double by 2025, there has never been so much focus on cost and power consumption per bit. That is why we launched the PSE-6s and why we are celebrating this first field trial with GlobalConnect, ushering in new era of single-wavelength 800GbE client transport to increase network capacity,” added James Watt, president of Nokia Optical Networks.
