Globe Telecom, Nokia pair 600G C-Band with 400G L-Band in WDM trial

The ability to transmit in both the C-Band and L-Band potentially doubles Globe’s fiber network capacity, Nokia asserts.

Nokia says it conducted a WDM field trial with Philippine mobile operator Globe Telecom in which the two companies transmitted a 600-Gbps channel in the C-Band and a 400-Gbps channel in the L-Band over Globe’s live optical network. The ability to transmit in both the C-Band and L-Band potentially doubles Globe’s fiber network capacity, Nokia asserts.

The trial took place over one of Globe’s backbone networks between the Tarlac and Cabanatuan segment, located in the Philippines’ Northern Luzon area. The partners leveraged Nokia’s PSE-Vs super-coherent chipset and 1830 Photonic Service Switch platform. Nokia and Globe foresee the potential of 600-Gbps wavelengths with 100-GHz channel spacing in the C-Band combined with 400-Gbps wavelengths with 75-GHz channel spacing in the L-Band enabling as much as 54.4 Tbps. Nokia asserts adding the L-Band capability to Globe’s fielded optical transmission systems is a relatively straightforward process.

“We are very pleased with the results of the field trial,” commented Joel Agustin, senior vice president and head of planning and engineering at Globe Telecom. “By leveraging Nokia’s industry leading C+L and coherent transport solutions, we’ll be able to expand and upgrade our network as we look to provide our customers with lightning-fast connections, higher level of security and greater flexibility. The minimum of three independent connections over separate backbone networks will allow us to accommodate the ever-increasing capacity demand between major cities. This is truly a network built not just for today, but for tomorrow as well, by offering our customers – from small businesses to hyperscalers – end-to-end solutions across the Philippines.”
