Lumen takes fiber pair on transatlantic Grace Hopper submarine cable system

Sept. 26, 2022
The fiber pair represents Lumen’s sixth investment in transatlantic submarine network connectivity.

Approximately a year after acquiring a fiber pair on Google’s Dunant submarine network, Lumen Technologies (NYSE: LUMN) says it has again gone transatlantic capacity shopping with Google. Lumen has acquired a fiber pair on the Grace Hopper submarine cable system between New York and Bude, Cornwall, in the UK that Google announced in July 2020 (see “Google to deploy Grace Hopper submarine cable to connect U.S., UK, Spain”). The submarine system will use Lumen landing station and infrastructure services at both ends of the Atlantic.

The fiber pair represents Lumen’s sixth investment in transatlantic submarine network connectivity. Lumen says it is taking orders for capacity on the new route, which Grace Hopper expected to be ready for service this October. Lumen expects the route to prove appealing to global businesses and wholesale providers. The company also will use the capacity to support its IP, voice, and CDN offerings.

"Data flow and capacity demands don't know boundaries. The bandwidth explosion across continents is real and we're meeting it head on by investing in new subsea cables," said Laurinda Pang, Lumen president of global customer success. "The Grace Hopper system is part of Lumen and Google's long history of collaboration. Together, we're building communications infrastructures for secure and reliable delivery of digital enterprise and consumer services around the world. We are pleased to be using our landing stations at these locations, and excited to add another end-to-end intercontinental connection to the Lumen network – one of the most deeply peered networks in the world."
