Zayo, Infinera send 800G wavelength nearly 1050 km

Zayo Group Holdings, Inc. and optical network technology partner Infinera (NASDAQ: INFN) reveal that they have collaborated to send an 800G wavelength 1,044.51 km on Zayo’s commercial network. The result, which leveraged a fiber route between Springville, UT, and Reno, NV, is a record for 800G transmission on a commercial network, the two companies assert.

The field demonstration leveraged Infinera’s ICE6 800G coherent optical engine and associated technology. The result exceeded the former record by 74.5 km, Zayo and Infinera say (see "Ciena sends 800G 970 km over TELUS fiber network" for the previous record holder).

The result came as Zayo embarks on an overall upgrade of its U.S. and European fiber networks to 400G on 31 routes and, in certain instances, 800G (see "Zayo plans 400G capabilities on 31 routes in North America and Western Europe"). The company’s first production 800G wavelength capabilities are on a route between New York and New Jersey and features two 400G client-slide connections per line-side 800G wavelength. Zayo says that it plans to add 800G capabilities to additional routes.
