GigNet-1 submarine cable marine survey finished

May 18, 2021
The submarine network will link Florida and Cancun, Mexico, with distribution throughout the Mexican Caribbean.

GigNet, Inc., which focuses on providing digital infrastructure in form of a fiber-optic broadband network in the Riviera Maya region of Quintana Roo, Mexico, says work has completed on the marine survey for its planned GigNet-1 submarine cable system. The submarine network will link Florida and Cancun, Mexico, with distribution throughout the Mexican Caribbean.

The 1,100 km GigNet-1 submarine cable system will integrate South Florida internet exchanges into GigNet’s terrestrial fiber network, which provides connectivity between the Yucatan Peninsula and the U.S. for hotels and resorts, other large enterprise customers, small to medium-sized businesses, smart homes, and GigNet “Smart Communities” in Quintana Roo. The company announced last month that it will take control of the submarine cable project via the pending acquisition of FB Submarine Partners LLC (see “GigNet to take over GigNet-1 submarine network project”). GigNet says it now expects to complete the acquisition this June.

I.T. International Telecom Inc., in cooperation with submarine network systems provider Xtera, will install the GigNet-1 cable system.

The marine route survey included geotechnical, geophysical, and shipwreck surveys, with the goal of developing a route optimized for cable protection, avoidance of obstructions, and other factors necessary for a successful and timely installation plan. GigNet says that terabytes of data are now being reviewed to help determine the final cable installation route.

"Implementing a new subsea cable is a process that requires meticulous planning and precise execution," said Paul Moore, CEO of GigNet Inc. "The completion of the marine survey is a major project milestone and allows us to confirm a planned ready for service date in the fourth quarter of 2022.”
