HyperOne Australian fiber backbone network planned

“HyperOne will be a new generation of hyperscaled network, capable of carrying over 10,000 Tbps – more traffic than every other national backbone built in Australia’s history combined,” according to the company's founder.

Bevan Slattery, an Australian entrepreneur perhaps best known for bankrolling submarine cable systems, has announced a new terrestrial initiative, HyperOne. The project foresees construction of a greater than 20,000-km fiber backbone network across Australia. The project will cost AU$1.5 billion and create more than 10,000 jobs during construction, Slattery estimates.

The HyperOne fiber backbone network will serve the cross-country communication infrastructure needs of cloud computing, data centers, environmental science, space vehicle launch, aerospace, satellite, and defense customers as well as provide a transmission option to local distribution networks such as the National Broadband Network and mobile operators. It appears the network is planned to link with cable landing stations in Sydney, Darwin, and Perth, as illustrated on a network map available online.

“HyperOne will be a new generation of hyperscaled network, capable of carrying over 10,000 Tbps – more traffic than every other national backbone built in Australia’s history combined,” according to Slattery, who added that the fiber network will feature “more than 1,000 ‘on-ramps’ in regional and remote Australia” to reach underserved communities and remote areas of the country.

The HyperOne project office is said to be already in contact with the National Broadband Network, the Northern Australian Infrastructure Fund, telecommunication companies, “various market participants,” and federal and state governments.

Slattery has had his hand in a number of fiber network companies and projects in Australia and the South Pacific, including Superloop, Sub.Co, SubPartners, PIPE Networks, Megaport, Cloudscene, and NextDC.
