Orange tests Nokia PSE-V coherent engine performance over pan-European fiber backbone network

The three-week exercise, concluded last month, saw high-speed coherent transmissions from the PSE-V run alongside commercial traffic on the Orange International Networks Infrastructures and Services (OINIS) pan-European backbone.

Orange and Nokia say that they conducted successful long-haul coherent transmission trials using Nokia’s Photonic Service Engine (PSE-V) chipsets (see “Nokia unveils WaveFabric Elements DSPs, optical engines starting at 400G”). The three-week exercise, concluded last month, saw high-speed coherent transmissions from the PSE-V run alongside commercial traffic on the Orange International Networks Infrastructures and Services (OINIS) pan-European backbone.

The test routes ran from a network node in Paris to 15 points of presence (PoPs). The trial saw the creation of 400-Gbps services on fiber links up to 3400 km. The collaborators also demonstrated transmission of up to 600 Gbps with spectral efficiency of more than 6 Gbps/GHz over paths longer than 1000 km. The test proved the efficacy of significantly increasing the transmission rates that the pan-European backbone could support, including 27 Tbps on a single pair of fibers between such major hubs as Paris and Lyon, say the companies.
