Russia’s GlobalNet upgrades fiber network to 800G via Ciena

Russian telecommunications services provider GlobalNet has upgraded its fiber network with 800G wavelength capabilities, according to Ciena (NYSE: CIEN), which added it supplied the necessary coherent transmission technology. GlobalNet has since brought up a 600G link between Moscow and St. Petersburg and enabled 800G data center interconnect in St. Petersburg.

The flexible-grid fiber-optic network upgrade leveraged Ciena’s WaveLogic 5 coherent engine aboard the communications technology company’s Waveserver 5 compact optical interconnect platform.

“The launch of 800 Gbps will enable us to tap into industry-leading innovations to set new standards for GlobalNet network performance,” commented Vladimir V. Vedeneev, GlobalNet’s CEO. “In today’s fast-paced world, the operator needs to provide subsequent capabilities to meet customer’s rapidly changing needs. With WaveLogic 5, we implemented the first 800G solution in Russia and strengthened our leadership in providing the highest performance optical connections to the market.”

GlobalNet operates an international backbone across Europe and Asia. The network has more than 30 connection points over a single traffic exchange network located in Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Germany, Sweden, Finland, and the Netherlands. There are more than 400 ASNs included in peering, where 80% are telecom operators and 20% are content providers. Its DATAIX-Internet exchange network provides connectivity between telecom operators and content providers in Russia, Europe, and Asia.
