United Fiber & Data lands regional telecom carrier as northeastern fiber network customer
Fiber-optic services provider United Fiber & Data (UFD) says it has landed a deal to supply long-haul dark fiber in the northeastern part of the U.S. The customer, which UFD would only identify as “a major super regional telecommunications carrier, will use more than 340 miles of dark fiber between New York City and Ashburn, VA.
The carrier may be a repeat customer – or, at least, one familiar with UFD. “We have a very successful, longstanding history with our customer’s senior management team. UFD was able to provide a diverse, scalable dark fiber solution that will drive expanded network coverage for a leading fiber communications provider within its Northeast markets,” said Christopher Lodge, UFD’s chief operating officer.
UFD announced the launch of the long-haul portion of its fiber-optic network in May 2019 (see "United Fiber & Data runs dark fiber network from New York City to Ashburn"). The new fiber network complements UFD’s wholly owned and operated high-fiber-count metro network, which includes more than 70 miles of laterals with over 330 buildings on-net in New York City. UFD asserts that it is well positioned to serve the increasing desire among carriers and data center services providers for network diversity and backup fiber-optic network infrastructure.
“UFD’s route provides expansion and additional diversity to the customer’s fiber routes in the Northeast and offers high-bandwidth, low-latency connectivity designed to prevent costly downtime in the event of a network disruption of their primary fiber path,” Lodge explained. “We are well-positioned for diverse regional connectivity between key markets, bypassing the congested existing fiber routes along I-95.”
