Liquid Intelligent Technologies deploys Nokia optical transport systems on Mombasa-to-Johannesburg fiber network

Feb. 6, 2023
The deployment is part of the creation of what Liquid calls a “terrestrial data superhighway” between Kenya and South Africa.

Liquid Intelligent Technologies, a business of Cassava Technologies, says it has deployed optical transport systems on a new fiber route between Mombasa, Kenya, and Johannesburg, South Africa. The deployment is part of the creation of what Liquid calls a “terrestrial data superhighway” between the two countries.

The optical transport equipment will support 12 Tbps of capacity for carrier and service provider customers in South Africa, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and the DRC. The 16,576-km fiber route also is expected to appeal to Liquid’s hyperscale customers as well as support connectivity for thousands of businesses and millions of households.

“Internet giants, established cloud service providers, and other mega-organizations are demanding hyperscale data centers that can support high levels of performance, spikes in demand, and redundancy while enabling massive availability. Our new terrestrial fiber corridor is the first of its kind in Africa in terms of distance and capacity,” said Shahzad Manzoor Khan, group CTO at Liquid Intelligent Technologies.

“As a business of Cassava Technologies, Liquid is committed to enabling a digitally connected future for every business and individual in Africa,” commented Hardy Pemhiwa, group president and CEO of Cassava Technologies. “We are proud to partner with Nokia as we expand our high-speed fiber backbone on the continent. This investment further demonstrates our commitment towards Africa’s inclusive digital transformation.”
