Accelecom targets business broadband in Kentucky with Fujitsu

Dec. 13, 2022
The deployment will enable Accelecom to better serve the needs of underserved city and county government offices, carriers, healthcare facilities, and enterprises within the state.

Fujitsu Network Communications, Inc. says it has acted as network systems integrator as well as technology supply partner in Accelecom’s business broadband network roll out across Kentucky. The deployment will enable Accelecom to better serve the needs of underserved city and county government offices, carriers, healthcare facilities, and enterprises within the state.

Accelecom’s roll out leverages dark fiber from the KentuckyWired middle-mile network, which connects all 120 counties in Kentucky and provides commercial access to 100G symmetrical data services. Fujitsu was responsible for network design, deployment, testing, and turnup. The work included specifying, sourcing, and integrating optical equipment and software from multiple vendors. That said, Fujitsu also supplied its 1FINITY Lambda blades and 1FINITY T300 transport blades to support flexible ROADM capabilities. Accelecom will use Fujitsu’s Virtuora Network Control software-defined network (SDN) platform as well.

Fujitsu also provided migration and deployment services that led to the installation of 21 new huts to house the optical equipment.

“With activation of the Accelecom broadband network, underserved businesses are seeing exponential increases in available internet speeds and latency problems have virtually disappeared,” said Kim Epley, chief commercial officer at Accelecom. “The robust broadband infrastructure and professional services provided by Fujitsu allowed us to build a future-ready gateway to the internet economy so that new economic development, job, and education opportunities can thrive throughout Kentucky.”

“Through their steadfast commitment to democratize bandwidth and narrow the digital divide, Accelecom has propelled Kentucky into the top tier of states with statewide, high-speed broadband,” said Greg Manganello, senior vice president and head of global network services at Fujitsu. “With their investment dedication, network persistence, and operational drive, Accelecom can now offer 100G access to businesses and enable service providers to provide ultra-fast internet offerings to all Kentucky residents. It has been a remarkable turnaround.”
