BoFiNet taps Ribbon for Botswana DWDM backbone network build

Ribbon Communications Inc. (Nasdaq: RBBN) says it has supplied BoFiNet with a range of DWDM and OTN switching equipment. The wholesale network services provider will use the equipment to upgrade its fiber-optic backbone in its home country of Botswana.

BoFiNet's backbone network comprises 10,600 km of fiber with connections to more than 200 towns and villages. The company services the connectivity needs of more than 75 of Botswana's service providers.

"Our backbone network is not only vital for service providers in Botswana, but also handles an enormous amount of international traffic, playing a crucial role in both pan-African and global connectivity for the entire country," said Mpho Koolese, BoFiNet technical executive. "Ribbon's solution gives us the flexibility to provide our customers with the connectivity they need today, the resilience and reliability to guarantee those services, and the capacity to grow and modernize, supporting their needs both now and well into the future."

BoFiNet has fielded multi-terabit capabilities using DWDM transport and OTN switching, with Ribbon's Apollo optical networking products as the foundation. Ribbon says the network is fully programmable optical network and supports multiple routing resiliency and dynamic restoration. The optical transport systems support 48 channels per fiber at 200G per channel. The system also provide a runway to 400G as traffic demand increases.
