Volta Networks VEVRE software to run on Delta Electronics switches

Volta Networks, which produces cloud-native routing software for open platforms, says it has partnered with Delta Electronics to enable the company’s Volta Elastic Virtual Routing Engine (VEVRE) platform to run on Delta's open networking switches. The collaboration includes Delta’s AGCV208S switch, which the Telecom Infra Project (TIP) has selected for Disaggregated Cell Site Gateway (DCSG) trials (see "TIM Brazil, Vodafone announce suppliers for TIP Disaggregated Cell Site Gateway trials").

VEVRE separates the control and data planes and leverages the cloud and open networking switches to reduce costs, says Volta. The control plane can run on any public, private, or hybrid cloud, the company asserts. The VEVRE platform hosts Virtual Route Processors (VRPs) that are unique to a specific customer, application, or service; they are assigned to a set of physical or logical ports on open switches running Volta's vAgent software. Volta says the use of VEVRE can reduce total cost of ownership by 90% compared to legacy routers. The platform can support up to 255 virtual routers per switch as well as support industry-standard routing protocols and carrier automation. Delta, meanwhile, offers open network switches based on Broadcom's DNX and XGS ASIC series. The AGCV208S is based on the Qumran AX ASIC.
