Telecom Infra Project launches Open Fixed Access Networks subgroup
The Telecom Infra Project (TIP), through its Fixed Broadband Project Group, plans to assist the migration of fiber broadband networks from GPON to XGS-PON via open, disaggregated, and interoperable technology. The new Open Fixed Access Networks sub-group will collaborate on the effort with Telefónica, TIM, and Vodafone. TIP has released an Open Fixed Access Networks Use Case Document that describes the goals of the effort.
TIP says the subgroup will seek to improve interoperability and diversity in access networks and modernize operations. Areas of focus will include:
- Multivendor interoperability, particularly between vendors of optical line terminals (OLTs) and optical network terminals/optical network units (ONTs/ONUs), as well as integration with SDN controllers
- Disaggregation of hardware and software
- Improved operating efficiencies.
The operators have committed to develop the technical requirements for the first use case: a “pizza box” OLT that can be deployed in a local exchange environment. They plan to release a request for information (RFI) to establish the technical capability and vendor readiness to deliver such an OLT this year, followed by test and validation of selected options.
“In Vodafone, we see that openness and disaggregation are key principles that allow us to build the flexible and agile network we need to support our evolving customer needs,” said Bruno Cornaglia, fixed access senior manager at Vodafone. “Our work in this area complements similar work elsewhere in the network, for example with OOPT and OpenRAN, and we’re excited that this project will help realize these same benefits in the fixed access network.”
“The disaggregation of OLTs represents a valuable opportunity to broaden the telecoms supply chain, which we’ve seen has become more important than ever during recent times,” commented Paolo Pellegrino, access innovation project manager at TIM. “TIM is excited about the opportunities to work with a new generation of hardware and software suppliers who can bring innovative solutions that will help us build more cost-effective and efficient networks.”
