DZS offers high-capacity Velocity V6 OLT as Huawei replacement

Oct. 17, 2022
The OLT's performance significantly exceeds that of the Huawei 6RU chassis that Velocity V6 is positioned to replace, according to DZS sources.

DZS (NASDAQ: DZSI) has expanded its Velocity fiber access network portfolio with the DZS Velocity V6 optical line terminal (OLT). The 6RU system features 800 Gbps of non-blocking switching per slot, multi-terabit uplinks, and an upgrade path from XGS-PON to 50G PON and 100G PON. Such performance significantly exceeds that of the Huawei 6RU chassis that Velocity V6 is positioned to replace, according to DZS sources.

In an XGS-PON configuration, the Velocity V6 OLT can serve 24,000 subscribers, said Charlie Vogt, DZS CEO. The system is designed to support future upgrades to 50G and 100G PON without forklift upgrades. Operators can operate the system in either centralized or distributed architectures via DZS’s SDN-friendly operating system and leverage the DZS Cloud software portfolio to enable orchestration, automation, service assurance, and WiFi experience management.

Vogt said he expects the Velocity V6 will appeal to both existing and new customers looking to provide long-term support of large-scale deployments – particularly operators who have decided (or have been mandated) to pursue either complete replacement of Huawei gear or a “cap and grow” approach. The company surveyed current Huawei users as part of the product development process, said Vogt. The Velocity V6 provides what Vogt asserted was an order-of-magnitude increase in capacity over currently fielded Huawei 6RU systems as well as increased flexibility.

DZS will display the Velocity V6 OLT this week at the Network X show in Amsterdam. The product should be generally available in the first quarter of next year, according to Miguel Alonso, chief product officer at DZS.
