Nokia, Furukawa partner to address passive optical LANs in Latin America
Nokia says it has agreed to partner with Furukawa Electric to market passive optical LAN technology in Latin America. Nokia will supply the passive optical LAN hardware and Furukawa Electric will address cabling and connectivity, with the respective parts combined into Furukawa Electric’s Laserway passive optical LAN offering that will be marketed by its partner ecosystem to the enterprise market. The partnership will focus initially on Brazil.
Passive optical LANs leverage the same systems technology as the passive optical networks used to deliver broadband services via fiber to the home and building. As is the case in the broadband space, passive optical LANs offer greater bandwidth, lower energy consumption, increased security, and lower total cost of ownership, adherents assert (see “Why now may be the time to rethink your LAN strategy”).
“The partnership between Furukawa and Nokia brings to our customers a state-of-the-art and innovative solution that allows great benefits in sustainability with reduction in power consumption, and at same time delivers a reliable and secure technological platform enhancing corporate governance,” commented Helio Durigan, vice president executive, Furukawa.
Nokia says Nokia it has deployed optical LAN s for more than 450 enterprise customers, including hotel chains, manufacturers, airports, schools, healthcare providers, governments, and others. “Because of fiber’s unlimited bandwidth potential, optical LAN is the ultimate long-term solution, available at 10-Gbps speeds today, but easily scalable to 25 Gbps with a simple change in the optics,” said Marcelo Entreconti, head of enterprise for Latin America at Nokia. “Nokia has deployed mission-critical networks to more than 2,200 leading enterprise customers in the transport, energy, large enterprise, manufacturing, webscale, and public sector segments around the globe and we’re proud to be partnering with Furukawa who has a long history of working with businesses in Brazil for technology integration and validation.”
