Orange Spain deploys ZTE 10-Gbps XGS-PON equipment

Jan. 10, 2022
The XGS-PON roll out will occur in Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Valencia, and Zaragoza.

ZTE Corp. (0763.HK / 000063.SZ) says it will assist Orange Spain with the deployment of 10-Gbps XGS-PON network. The 10G PON roll out will occur in Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Valencia, and Zaragoza.

Orange Spain will use the ZTE F8648P XGS-PON ONT, a decision reached after multiple rounds of testing, ZTE asserts. The evaluations included a live XGS-PON demonstration last October using the F8648P XGS-PON ONT that demonstrated symmetrical transmission rates of 8.6 Gbps. The ONT supports eight spatial streams and Wi-Fi 6.

Orange Spain began its fiber to the home (FTTH) deployments in 2013 (see “Orange launches own FTTH network in Spain”), making it among the first operators in Europe to deploy fiber broadband, ZTE asserts. The upcoming XGS-PON roll out also serves as a harbinger for the future of European fiber broadband, the company stated. The expected future use of advanced PON technology will come against a backdrop of expanded FTTH deployments, ZTE added. The company quotes a recent Omdia report in which the market research firm’s analysts predicted the number of FTTx users in Europe would reach 96.4 million by the end of last year and increase to 154.01 million in 2026.
