Hitron offers cable operators NOVA 10G-PON ONTs and ONUs

The fiber broadband CPE line will support 10G-EPON, XG-PON, and XGS-PON architectures. The 10G-EPON units feature DOCIS Provisioning of EPON 2.0 (DPoE 2.0) capabilities.

Hitron Technologies, which offers DOCSIS customer premise equipment (CPE) to cable MSOs, has launched the NOVA family of 10G-PON optical network terminals (ONTs) and optical network units (ONUs). The fiber broadband CPE line will support 10G-EPON, XG-PON, and XGS-PON architectures. The 10G-EPON units feature DOCIS Provisioning of EPON 2.0 (DPoE 2.0) capabilities.

Additional features include 10G and 1G LAN support, remote manageability via 802.3ah OAM, built-in fiber tray (select models), and optional voice and battery backup (select models).

Hitron sees a growing demand for such ONTs/ONUs as services providers move to support the greater bandwidth demands expected from IPTV, HD and ultra-HD video on demand, cloud gaming, multi-gigabit data, telecommuting, interactive applications, voice over IP, and others. The DPoE support in particular makes it more straightforward for cable MSOs and others running DOCSIS-based hybrid fiber/coax (HFC) networks to upgrade to an all-fiber approach.

“10G-PON delivers the multi-gigabit bandwidth and quality that service providers need to maximize their revenue opportunities in residential and business markets,” said Greg Fisher, president at Hitron Technologies Americas. “We’re excited to add the NOVA family of 10G-PON ONTs/ONUs to our portfolio of DOCSIS 3.0 and 3.1 products, as it gives providers choices on how to deliver multi-gigabit services and upgrade their networks to meet the demand for high-capacity Internet.”
