TIME Malaysia to pilot 10G PON fiber broadband networking with Huawei

The pilot FTTP network will be used to evaluate 10G PON as a means to keep pace with growing bandwidth demand from such applications as virtual reality/augmented reality (VR/AR), cloud computing, and full-fiber campuses.

Huawei says it has signed a memorandum of understanding with TIME dotCom of Malaysia to construct a pilot 10G PON fiber to the premises (FTTP) network. The pilot FTTP network will be used to evaluate 10G PON as a means to keep pace with growing bandwidth demand from such applications as virtual reality/augmented reality (VR/AR), cloud computing, and full-fiber campuses.

"Network infrastructure is constantly evolving, and we are excited at the prospects that 10G PON would have. An upgrade to a higher-capacity network infrastructure is critical to supporting the future bandwidth requirements of our customers," said Ang Thing Jiun, TIME’s CTO.

Huawei likely will supply elements of its Flex-PON 10G PON line. The Flex-PON optical line terminal (OLT) supports multiple transmission modes, including both 10G PON and GPON. The system features a Class D high-power symmetrical 10G PON/GPON Combo optical module that Huawei asserts delivers an optical power budget 25% higher than industry average. The increase in optical power can extend coverage by 17 km to connect more users, the company says. TIME also can take advantage of Huawei’s network cloud engine (NCE), which leverages artificial intelligence and a range of algorithms (including algorithms for PON optical path characteristics, Wi-Fi channel optimization, and optical path failure prediction) to enable more efficient and flexible network operations and maintenance, Huawei adds.
