Telefónica to pair with Radisys for disaggregated open broadband network

Radisys Corp. and Telefónica S.A. say that the Spain-based service provider will deploy elements of Radisys’s Connect Open Broadband portfolio to create an open, disaggregated broadband network. The decision comes after lab testing of the product line elements and is expected to lead to deployment in a live commercial network next year.

The cloud-native Connect Open Broadband line includes white-box Combo-PON optical line terminals (OLTs), the Connect Broadband Access Controller (CBAC), and Radisys Management System (RMS) software. Radisys says that use of an open, disaggregated broadband network strategy enables Telefónica to leverage multiple vendors in its network, avoiding both vendor lock-in as well as supply chain issues. Lower total cost of ownership and a path toward network automation are other benefits, according to the company.

Telefónica is a longstanding proponent of open, disaggregated networking. It was an early adopter of the Telecom Infra Project’s disaggregated cell site gateway and has been an active participant in other of the organization’s efforts (see “Telefónica extends Distributed Cell Site Gateway deployments to Peru”).
