Xplornet plans Prince Edward Island FTTP expansion

June 6, 2022
Xplornet says this new effort comes on the heels of an ongoing FTTP deployment designed to reach more than 20,000 residents and businesses in rural communities across PEI.

Canadian broadband services provider Xplornet Communications Inc. says it plans to deploy fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP infrastructure to 790 homes and businesses in Prince Edward Island (PEI). The work expands a larger FTTP effort underway in the maritime province.

This latest initiative will be funded via a combination of Xplornet's private investment and Canada’s Universal Broadband Fund. Xplornet says this new effort comes on the heels of an ongoing FTTP deployment designed to reach more than 20,000 residents and businesses in rural communities across PEI. FTTP-based Xplore Fibre is available to more than 270 homes and business in the province’s Vernon Bridge and surrounding communities, and Xplornet says more communities will come online throughout the year.

"Xplornet is bringing the benefits of a next-generation fiber network to even more residents and businesses in Prince Edward Island," stated Allison Lenehan, president and CEO of Xplornet Communications Inc. "Connecting rural Canadians has been our mission for nearly 20 years. Our growing investments in the province will enable access to fast and reliable connectivity for years to come."

Overall, Xplornet says it will spend CAN$500 million over five years to deploy both FTTP and wireless technology to reach rural customers. Xplornet has fiber deployments underway in Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, and Nova Scotia, as well as PEI.
