Vexus Fiber states that Santa Fe’s Governing Body approved a bill that will allow the all-fiber broadband provider to deploy a symmetrical 10-Gbps fiber to the home (FTTH) network in the New Mexico city. The company plans spend $35 million on the FTTH project, with deployment starting this year and lasting 24-36 months.
The deployment will follow existing public rights-of-way, according to the bill, which also calls for the fiber to be located underground or overhead. Vexus estimates the project will lead to 85-90 new jobs to the region, at least 35 of which are expected to be permanent. After buildout of the FTTH network within city limits is complete, Vexus is allowed to consider expanding into surrounding areas.
"This is a boon for Santa Fe," said Rich Brown, director of economic and community for Santa Fe. "It's going to bring fast broadband to residential areas of the city that don't currently have it, and it's going to support our growing tech, film, and entrepreneurial communities, and help attract new businesses. And it grows as we grow."
"Santa Fe is fast becoming a dynamic place for forward-thinking institutions,” added Mayor Alan Webber. “One key piece to our future is reliable, fast broadband for our people to work and live here. This network should play a significant part in forging the path to the future, to make our city have cutting-edge technology that will make Santa Fe even more dynamic."
