DE-CIX moves to 400G fiber backbone via Smartoptics open line system
Smartoptics says it has won a contract to assist DE-CIX as the internet exchange upgrades its fiber backbone network with 400G capabilities. The fiber network will leverage Smartoptics’ open line systems to enable smoother and faster provisioning, simplified network operations, and reduced costs, according to the optical transport technologies provider.
DE-CIX provides network interconnection services at 28 locations across Europe, Middle East, North America, and Asia. The company decided to upgrade its network after seeing an approximately 30% year-on-year growth in traffic demands – and even higher spikes during the pandemic. For example, its site in Frankfurt manages more than 10 Tbps of traffic during peak hours – and will be the first recipient of the Smartoptics DCP-M40-ZR+ open line systems that will form the basis of the upgrade. The DCP-M40-ZR+ performs multiplexing, signal amplification, and monitoring. Other DE-CIX locations will see installation of the open line systems as well.
“With this latest technological leap, we prepare for the digital future,” commented Dr. Thomas King, CTO at DE-CIX. “Having followed Smartoptics’ development as a key advocate for open line systems over the years, we were confident that this was the right choice for us. 400G technologies are an important key to DE-CIX’s future growth in order to prepare for upcoming traffic growth. The new 400G network solution is exciting on several levels. It will enable us to create an entirely new experience for our customers, with simpler and faster service provisioning. Since the new type of network requires fewer infrastructure components, it will also allow us to simplify network architecture and operations – you might even say plug & play – while reducing the cost.”
“We are excited that DE-CIX, as the world’s leading Internet Exchange operator, is showing their confidence in Smartoptics’ products when upgrading and upscaling their mission-critical network. That our solutions for 400G connectivity fit DE-CIX’s global deployment of open line systems and bandwidth optimized routers is clear proof of our successful strategy for open and disaggregated networking solutions,” added Magnus Grenfeldt, CEO of Smartoptics.
