Japanese service provider Mixi deploys Smartoptics’ DCP-M8 Open Line System
Open optical systems developer Smartoptics says that it has delivered its DCP-M8 Open Line System to Mixi, a Japanese communication service provider. The open line system will enable PAM4-based 100G DWDM connectivity on Mixi’s fiber network infrastructure.
Mixi offers a range of social networking and gaming communication services. They include the social networking service "mixi," the mobile game "Monster Strike," and the photo sharing application called "Family Album Mitene.” Mixi Japan operates a fiber network that connects four data centers across the country to support delivery of these services. At the end of 2018, Mixi, decided to launch a network upgrade that would increase wavelength capacity to 100G as well as improve network redundancy. The installation of the DCP-M8 is a result of that decision, with the first deployment linking two of the company’s data centers.
“As the first Japanese operator who deployed an open networking approach in production, Mixi is very pleased to now introduce Smartoptics’ Open Line System in the network. The solution allows us to offer both increased capacity and flexibility towards customers. The products are also incredibly easy to install and manage which brings down our operating expenses," said Tatsuma Murase, CTO of Mixi.
Smartoptics’ local partner and system integrator, Hakuto, assisted in the project. The company says Mixi plans to deploy the open line systems on links to the remaining data centers as well. “We are very proud to have been selected for this high-profile project in Japan. Mixi’s open networking approach is a perfect fit with our view on how modern optical networks should be built,” commented Magnus Grenfeldt, CEO at Smartoptics.
