2022 internet volume at AMS-IX doubles that of 2018

Feb. 7, 2023
Related to the growing traffic is the number of connected networks at AMS-IX Amsterdam; that total has reached 889. Most connections remain at 10 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE), but the number of active 100GbE ports rose 19% from 360 in 2021 to 428 in 2022.

AMS-IX (Amsterdam Internet Exchange) reports that it exchanged 29.39 exabytes of data in 2022. That’s more than twice the 14.12 exabytes the facility handled in 2018.

The peak traffic at AMS-IX last year was 11.6 Tbps. “Internet growth at our exchanges is a sign of the ever-growing use of digital services and devices in society in general and the importance of AMS-IX as a vital part of the digital gateway to Europe,” stated AMS-IX CEO Peter van Burgel. “Especially during the pandemic years, the internet usage surged which resulted in significant growth on the platform.”

AMS-IX says it is adding internet exchanges outside the Netherlands to its portfolio as well. Last year, AMS-IX opened new facilities in Singapore, Cairo, Kolkata, and Hyderabad. The exchange in Singapore already has seven networks connected to it. Meanwhile, the company’s already established exchanges in Manama (465 Gbps) and Hong Kong (88 Gbps) reached new traffic peaks last year.

The figures from AMS-IX follow similar trends that DE-CIX recently reported for its exchanges (see “DE-CIX reports 48 exabytes of data traffic at its internet exchanges in 2022”).
