Internet exchange launched in Bangkok, Thailand

The companies say the internet exchange is needed as Thailand develops as an important Asian hub for internet traffic exchange.

HGC Global Communications Limited (HGC), Amsterdam Internet Exchange (AMS-IX), and International Gateway Company Ltd. (IGC) say they have collaborated to create AMS-IX Bangkok, a new internet exchange in Thailand. The companies say the internet exchange is needed as Thailand develops as an important Asian hub for internet traffic exchange.

The partners say that content providers, gaming providers, OTTs, cloud service providers, and internet service providers in the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) who use AMS-IX Bangkok will see lower operation costs and enhanced connectivity and redundancy as well as lower latency. HGC, which also partners with AMX-IX to provide connectivity to its internet exchanges in Singapore, Hong Kong, the San Francisco Bay Area, and Chicago will also serve the new exchange as well as act as a commercial partner and marketing arm for AMS-IX Bangkok. IGC will provides IX infrastructure, network, and operational services in Bangkok.

“Bangkok is strategically located at the heart of Southeast Asia, which makes it ideal as an international hub for exchanging Internet traffic and a perfect location as a gateway to the GMS,” commented Onno Bos, international partnership director of AMS-IX. “There are over 54 million internet users in Thailand, representing 80% of the population, and this number is still rising rapidly. As AMS-IX we’re happy to collaborate with our partners, HGC and IGC, to bring fruit to our mission of increasing the quality of the internet worldwide by developing and building internet exchanges.”
