Meta to build hyperscale data center in Kansas City, MO

Meta (ex-Facebook) has announced plans to build a hyperscale data center in Kansas City, MO. The facility will measure nearly 1 million square feet data center within the Golden Plains Technology Park in both Platte and Clay Counties. Meta says it plans to spend more than $800 million on the build, with the goal of being operational in 2024, according to Missouri Partnership, a public-private economic development organization that Meta listed as one of several “community partners” in the project.

Meta estimates it will employ approximately 100 people at the data center. The company also anticipates more than 1,300 construction workers will be working onsite at the building effort’s peak. The facility will operate with 100% renewable energy, according to Missouri Partnership; Meta says it has arrange with its utility partner, Evergy, to develop a new market-based tariff that will enable the company and other customers to contract for new renewable energy. Meta asserts the data center will be at least 80% more water-efficient than the average facility as well.
