EdgeConneX has announced plans to build an edge data center facility about 15 km from the center of Barcelona, in Spain’s Sant Boi de Llobregat region. The data center is expected to be ready for service in the fourth quarter of this year. EdgeConneX says a global IT services provider and systems integrator will serve as the facility’s first anchor tenant.
The Barcelona 8 MW N+1, carrier-neutral edge data center will feature 7,600 square meters of space. It also will be carbon neutral while employing renewable energy strategies. EdgeConneX will use the facility to offer local, cloud, and content access as well as secure server colocation.
“We are continuing our push to bring the edge closer to those that need it most, where they need it most. It’s a client-centric philosophy that runs companywide and takes us to places like Barcelona where we, alongside our technology partners and community leaders, can have an immediate and positive impact on overall business opportunity and edge market growth,” stated Dick Theunissen, managing director, EMEA, at EdgeConneX.
“The second largest city in Spain, Barcelona has become a digital hotspot for communications and technological innovation in Spain,” commented Daniel Bizo, senior research analyst at 451 Research, part of S&P Global Market Intelligence, as quoted in an EdgeConneX press release from the June 2019 Madrid Aspires to Become the Next Digital Hub report. “Recent investments in subsea cable projects and additional data center capacity have placed Barcelona, like Madrid, on a trajectory that, if sustained, will elevate the metro's position from that of a local hub to one of much greater significance in the global network of digital infrastructure.”
