France-IX to deploy Nokia 7750-SR-s IP routers

Internet peering service provider France-IX says it plans to upgrade its interconnection backbone through deployment of Nokia 7750-SR-s IP routers. The routers will bring higher port density as well as the ability to support 100 Gigabit Ethernet now and 400 Gigabit Ethernet in the future.

Founded in June 2010 with the support of the French Internet community, France-IX is a member-based association that offers public and private interconnection services through its carrier- and data center-neutral exchange points in Paris and Marseille. France-IX says it selected the 7750-SR-s for its “stability, high performance, flexibility, and scalability,” in the words of a press release. In addition to providing greater port density and higher-rate transmission interfaces, the routers also will enable a smooth upgrade from VPLS to Ethernet virtual private network (EVPN) operation as well as the ability to offer network automation and telemetry. France-IX also expects to be able to automate the new service provision and decrease time to activation to less than a day.

“We chose Nokia as our long-term partner because it offers the most advanced technology to homogenize the whole foundation for our IXP platform infrastructure starting with the renewal of our backbone and working towards a broader objective of achieving a long-term homogenous platform for all our PoPs,” says Simon Muyal, chief technical officer at France-IX. “This major investment – the highest made by France-IX since its creation – will give us outstanding stability and the ability to meet our anticipated growth in terms of increased demand for capacity. We look forward to being able to scale valuable new service offerings, automate network operations, or rapidly deploy new services without constraints.”

France-IX expects deployments of the Nokia 7750-SR-s IP routers to begin in Paris and Marseille this year, with upgrades to all PoPs to be completed progressively from 2020, according to need.
