1Q22 data center switch revenues jump 16% year-over-year: Dell’Oro

Worldwide sales of data center switches increased 16% in the first quarter of 2022, according to Dell’Oro Group. The market research firm states in its latest Ethernet Switch – Data Center Quarterly Report that revenues missed equaling the previous quarter’s record levels by just 2%.

Nearly 70% of the switches shipped during 1Q22 carried ports of either 25 Gbps, 100 Gbps, 200 Gbps, or 400 Gbps. Such switches also accounted for 80% of the quarter’s revenues. Signally growing acceptance, 400-Gbps port shipments exceeded 800,000; Dell’Oro expects 400G port shipments to accelerate further this year.

“Despite ongoing supply challenges, the data center switch market continues to perform remarkably well across all major market segments: cloud service providers (SPs), telco SPs as well as large enterprises, with cloud SPs contributing about 70% of the Y/Y increase in sales,” said Sameh Boujelbene, senior research director at Dell’Oro Group.

“What was also interesting during the quarter is that despite these supply issues which are impacting all components, all industries, all regions, and all manufacturers, some vendors were somehow able to outperform the market. We would like to note, however, that given elongated lead times that are now exceeding six months on several products, sales and vendors’ performance reported in 1Q 2022 are a reflection of orders, and in some cases, competitive displacements that happened in the second half of last year,” added Boujelbene.

Dell’Oro says that Arista, H3C, Juniper, Star-net Ruijie, and white-box vendors accounted for most of the quarter’s market growth. Arista was able to gain more than two points of revenue share during the quarter, for example.

Dell’Oro’s Ethernet Switch – Data Center Quarterly Report covers Ethernet switches for server access, server aggregation, and data center core. (Software is addressed separately.) The report contains market and vendor-level information on manufacturers’ revenue; ports shipped; average selling prices for both modular and fixed managed and unmanaged Ethernet switches (1,10, 25, 40, 50, 100, 200, 400, ≥800 Gbps); revenue split by market segments; as well as regional breakouts.
