Fiber-optic network services provider Telia Carrier, which began a spin out of Telia when it was sold to a group of Swedish pension funds (see "Telia to sell Telia Carrier business to Polheim Infra") that it completed last June, is taking a further step away from its former parent by changing its name to Arelion (pronounced Ah-ray-li-yon). The company will continue to operate its AS1299 worldwide internet backbone and complementary infrastructure, which together includes more than 70,000 km of fiber and 1,700 MPLS endpoints in 125 countries.

Arelion says the new name echoes the English adjective “reliable” as well as the names of stars and constellations such as Aldebaran, Sirius, and Orion. Thus, “Arelion is a guiding light in connectivity,” the company asserts, as it delivers Global Internet Transit, Wavelengths, Ethernet, Mobile Data, and Wholesale Voice Termination service to its large enterprise and service provider customers.
