Proximus taps VIAVI's ONMSi, OTU-8000 to monitor FTTH network

March 27, 2018
VIAVI Solutions (NASDAQ: VIAV) says it will supply its ONMSi Optical Network Monitoring System to Belgium's Proximus. The service provider will use the system to test and monitor its fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) build-out during its initial phase. In addition, VIAVI says it will supply its OTU-8000 Optical Test Unit to expand its ONMSi capabilities for the project's second phase.

Use of the ONMSi system will ensure the FTTH network is qualified according to Proximus standards, performs reliably during deployment, and reduces the mean time to repair (MTTR) once the network is up and running, says VIAVI. The ONMSi system will operate 24/7 to provide remote fiber network testing, the company adds.

"Proximus is successfully expanding its FTTH technology into residential areas – we chose VIAVI to help us deliver a high-performing network so subscribers can enjoy dependable voice, video and data services, and fast internet access," said Guillaume Guevar, director fiber, Proximus. "VIAVI provided an integrated test tool that gives us full visibility into our FTTH network performance to quickly identify and prevent potential service-affecting network issues."

Meanwhile, VIAVI says Proximus will employ the OTU-8000 during the second phase of the service provider's FTTH expansion. The Optical Test Unit combines optical time-domain reflectometry (OTDR) and optical-switch technology and is a part of the ONMSi's fiber network monitoring capabilities. Proximus will use the instrument to detect and locate fiber degradation from a central office, as well as receive details of any detected faults.

The OTU-8000's measurements, recorded in a central database, will enable Proximus to evaluate long-term fiber performance as part of asset management. The fact that the unit can be used from a central office eliminates the need for portable equipment use by field technicians, VIAVI points out.
