Coherent Solutions, which specializes in technology for test and measurement of coherent transmission designs, has introduced the IQABC, an automatic bias controller for IQ-modulators. The unit is modulation format independent and offers the best speed, repeatability, and accuracy available, the company asserts.

The company points out that stable and accurate modulator bias control has become increasingly important as developers work on 400-Gbps systems based on 16QAM as well as other applications that require complex modulation formats such as mPSK and mQAM. The IQABC, when connected to an OIF-compatible IQ-modulator, independently controls all DC biases, in automatic or manual mode, to maintain optimization against bias drifts or changes to the driving signal.

"The IQABC will relieve optical engineers of the rather frustrating task of modulator bias maintenance for higher order modulation formats. With its robust, modulation format independent algorithm, it simply just works." said Andy Stevens, CEO of Coherent Solutions.

The IQABC is commercially available. Coherent Solutions will show the device in action at OFC 2016, booth 1328, in Anaheim, CA, this month.
