JULY 20, 2009 -- JDSU (search Lightwave for JDSU) has introduced new features to its T-BERD/MTS-6000A platform that the company says makes the instrument the industry's smallest and most complete all-in-one device for testing Ethernet over SONET/SDH. The features enable the use of one module and one graphical user interface (GUI) for all interfaces up to 10G to improve the speed with which users can troubleshoot problems in the field. The new features have led to multiple carrier product approvals for the T-BERD/MTS-6000A, JDSU asserts.

The T-BERD®/MTS-6000A GUI is designed to guide users directly to the network layer that is causing trouble without the need for them to be an expert in every layer. This enables network architects, engineers, and technicians to quickly identify and resolve the source of network quality issues, according to JDSU.

"As Ethernet services become more prominent, carriers are presented with the challenge to offer them in an economic manner reusing their existing SONET/SDH infrastructure," said Jim Nerschook, vice president and general manager in JDSU's Communications Test and Measurement business segment. "The new features on the T-BERD/MTS-6000A help address this challenge and at the same time reduce the complexity and costs of managing Carrier Ethernet networks. These innovations further demonstrate JDSU's commitment to building customer confidence by helping them deploy reliable and cost-effective Carrier Ethernet networks."

The T-BERD/MTS-6000A offers standard SONET/SDH test capabilities (including overhead analysis, round-trip-delay testing, and service disruption testing with multiple different triggers). It also enables users to set up and analyze Virtual Concatenation (VCAT) structures as well as verify the correct transformation of asynchronous Ethernet frames into synchronous SONET/SDH containers using GFP encapsulation. Within the same module and GUI, the T-BERD/MTS-6000A performs Ethernet/IP tests such as traffic generation and analysis, delay measurements, packet jitter analysis, and ICMP pings. Alarm, error insertion, and analysis capabilities at all layers stress test the network and verify correct reporting in network management.

The JDSU T-BERD/MTS-6000A is a compact, lightweight, and modular test platform designed for all phases of fiber and transport network installation and maintenance.
