Digital Lightwave intros battery-powered 40G test set

JANUARY 15, 2009 -- A rechargeable battery enables technicians to perform tests with or without external power. Battery power also serves to protect the integrity of test results in case of unanticipated power loss during long-term tests, according to the company.

JANUARY 15, 2009 -- Digital Lightwave Inc. (search for Digital Lightwave) has announced the NIC BP 40G, which it asserts is the industry's only battery-powered 40/43-Gbps test set. A rechargeable battery enables technicians to perform tests with or without external power. Battery power also serves to protect the integrity of test results in case of unanticipated power loss during long-term tests, according to the company.

Battery power is also available in the NIC BP chassis, which can be equipped with different modules to support SONET/SDH up to 10 Gbps, OTN up to 10.7 Gbps, Ethernet 10/100/1000Base-T, Gigabit Ethernet and 10-Gigabit Ethernet, optical spectrum analyzer (OSA), Fibre Channel, DS1/E1/E3/DS3/E4 testing, and more. The NIC BP can be equipped with the new Multi-Service Analyzer (MSA) or Ethernet Service Analyzer (ESA) series modules plus PDH/T-Carrier module for a flexible all-in-one test instrument, Digital Lightwave says.

"Battery power provides quick set up and testing capability in locations where AC power is not readily available," stated Mike Botham, director of engineering at Digital Lightwave. "And where AC power is unreliable, the battery can serve as backup power for long-term testing. With the addition of battery operation, the NIC Platform is more flexible than ever before."

The NIC BP 40G and NIC 40G (without battery) are the industry's smallest and lightest 40/43-Gbps test instruments, Digital Lightwave asserts.

The NIC BP chassis can be equipped with the following modules:


  • MSA 2020/MSA 2030 for SONET/SDH, Ethernet, and Fibre Channel test
  • ESA 2025 for Ethernet test
  • PDH/T-Carrier testing
  • High-Density Ethernet multi-port Ethernet test
  • OSA
  • Serial Interface Analyzer for RS-530 and RS-232 test.
