PD-LD debuts triplexer for multi-wavelength test applications

JANUARY 19, 2009 -- The new triplexer provides test equipment manufacturers with the ability to offer their customers a more efficient way to test fiber-optic installations. The three primary wavelengths of light used in FTTH and commercial installations--1310 nm, 1490 nm, and 1550 nm--are all now available in a single, convenient package, says the company.

JANUARY 19, 2009 -- PD-LD Inc. (search for PD-LD), provider of Volume Bragg Grating (VBG) technology, has introduced a triplexer laser module intended for use in fiber-optic test equipment that requires multiple wavelengths of light.

According to PD-LD, the triplexer provides test equipment manufacturers with the ability to offer their customers a more efficient way to test fiber-optic installations. The three primary wavelengths of light used in fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) and commercial installations--1310 nm, 1490 nm, and 1550 nm--are all now available in a single, convenient package.

These fiber-optic active device assemblies are built with three laser diode sources. In PD-LD's triplexers, the three DFB semiconductor lasers are optically coupled to singlemode fiber in a manner that ensures stable and repeatable light output over a wide operating temperature range, say company representatives. Having the three wavelengths combined allows the creation of a single-port instrument for fiber-optic installers, allowing them to test all three wavelengths concurrently and only requiring one optical connection.

"This product was designed to meet the needs of both test equipment designers and installers of fiber-optic lines," explains Tom DeBerardine, executive vice president of sales for PD-LD. "By having all three sources coupled into one singlemode fiber, test equipment designers have the ability to make their product more compact. For installers, this product will reduce the time required to test the fiber with each wavelength of light since they can connect to the fiber once and characterize all three wavelengths simultaneously," he notes.

Modules are available with all standard fiber-optic connectors. Other wavelengths and fiber types are available upon request.
