Luciol Instruments touts portable high-resolution OTDR

March 2, 2009
MARCH 2, 2009 -- The LOR-200 features a unique dynamic range for short pulse lengths (up to 15 dB for 2-ns pulses), enabling the device to see through optical splitters, even over very short distances, say Luciol representatives. As a result, the device is ideal for PON installation and monitoring applications.

MARCH 2, 2009 -- Luciol Instruments (search for Luciol instruments) recently launched its first fully portable high-resolution OTDR, the LOR-200. According to the company, it is similar in shape and feel to a standard portable OTDR, but achieves "unprecedented" resolution. It is based on Luciol's proprietary, patent-pending scanning photon counting technology.

The LOR-200 distinguishes events with 20-cm separation and has a sub-m attenuation dead zone. It features a very high contrast (defined as the ratio between the highest signal and the noise on a trace), which allows end users to see both high reflections and Rayleigh Backscattering on a single trace, claim company representatives. The LOR-200, therefore, is ideal for characterization of optical fiber assemblies with both loss and high reflections at connectors.

Its unique dynamic range for short pulse lengths (up to 15 dB for 2-ns pulses) enables the device to see through optical splitters, even over very short distances, says Luciol. This combination of high resolution and high dynamic range makes it an excellent tool for Passive Optical Network (PON) installation and monitoring. The 1625-nm option with matched filter allows the LOR-200 to be used on live PONs, without disturbing the transmission.

The LOR-200 is available for a variety of fiber types and wavelengths as a custom system. It is now ready for ordering and shipment from Luciol.

Luciol Instruments OTDRs are available from distributor AMS Technologies in Germany.
