Southern Cross selects JDSU 40G/100G test set

JDSU (NASDAQ: JDSU) (TSX: JDU) reveals that Southern Cross Cable Network will use JDSU's T-BERD/MTS-8000 V2 40G/100G Transport Module to support an upgrade of the submarine cable network from 10 Gbps to 40 Gbps.

The V2 Transport Module also should prove useful when Southern Cross eventually moves to 100 Gbps, JDSU adds.

The Southern Cross Cable Network is the main Internet channel between Australia, New Zealand, and the United States. Ciena Corp. (NASDAQ: CIEN) announced last November that it had won a contract to supply the 40-Gbps transport technology (see “Ciena supplies 40G coherent for Southern Cross network”). Southern Cross plans to apply 40-Gbps capabilities on all of its network segments, including the longest one that spans 8,002 km.

Southern Cross will use JDSU's T-BERD/MTS-8000 V2 for field tests during installation, troubleshooting, and maintenance, including applications in which Southern Cross technicians will have remote visibility of the traffic on their network. The new 40G/100G transport module also should speed identification of network problems, relaying relevant data to the Southern Cross Network Operations Center in Auckland, New Zealand, for analysis and resolution.

The V2 also will enable Southern Cross to ensure operational compliance with Optical Transport Network (OTN) standards.

"The JDSU solution provides the functionality we require as we continue our infrastructure upgrade, ensuring our system will support the quality delivery of higher-bandwidth services that our customers demand," said Brian Smith, engineering services manager, Southern Cross Cable Network.
