Agilent intros reference receiver module for LAN/SAN apps

MAY 7, 2008 -- Agilent has introduced what it claims is the industry's first optical/electrical module to provide unfiltered bandwidth and reference receiver capabilities for 100-Gigabit Ethernet signals (implemented as four lanes each in the 25.8- to 27.7-Gbit/sec range) and 16X Fibre Channel (17-Gbit/sec single-mode variants) signals.

MAY 7, 2008 -- Agilent Technologies Inc. (search for Agilent Technologies) has introduced what it claims is the industry's first optical/electrical module that provides unfiltered bandwidth and reference receiver capabilities for 100-Gigabit Ethernet (100-GbE) signals (implemented as four lanes each in the 25.8- to 27.7-Gbit/sec range) and 16X Fibre Channel (17-Gbit/sec single-mode variants) signals. The combination of unfiltered optical bandwidth to 45 GHz and reference receiver capabilities in one module significantly accelerates the design cycle and product validation testing, say company representatives, allowing engineers to increase productivity and speed design improvements.

Used in Agilent's 86100C DCA-J wideband oscilloscope mainframe, the Agilent 86116C Option 025 module allows engineers to investigate, design, and verify the performance of transceivers that terminate optical fibers for next-generation local area (LAN) and storage area (SAN) networks.

"Since the telecom days of the 1990s, customers have been counting on Agilent to be the first in the industry to address their emerging sampling oscilloscope needs with application-specific solutions," contends Scott Sampl, vice president and general manager of Agilent's oscilloscope business. "Like other members of the Agilent 86100C family, the new 86116C Option 025 helps engineers get deeper insight into their devices, increase their productivity, and improve their designs in less time."

Option 025 works with 1310-nm and 1550-nm singlemode transmitters and characteristically has 45-GHz optical and 93-GHz electrical unfiltered bandwidth. Engineers prefer line-rate-specific reference receivers because they make compliance measurements far more consistently and reproducibly than unfiltered receivers. In addition, engineers need sufficient unfiltered bandwidth to troubleshoot designs and improve manufacturing yields.

Agilent says the 86116C Option 025 is available now at a starting price of $60,000. Agilent 86100C DCA-J firmware revision 8.0 is required and will be available at www.agilent.com/find/dcaj beginning June 2008.
