$25-million acquisition: Scientific-Atlanta Inc., Norcross, GA, has acquired Chicago-based ATx Telecom Systems Inc. from Amoco Technology Co. for $25 million. The move strengthens Scientific-Atlanta`s position in various 1550-nm fiber-optic technologies, including erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (Edfas).

ATx is a supplier of Edfa fiber-optic products for hybrid fiber/coaxial-cable networks. By adding Edfa research and development, manufacturing and marketing to its current radio-frequency and fiber-optic product family, Scientific-Atlanta can offer additional cost-effective platforms for wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) and dense WDM.
