3S PHOTONICS unveils 750-mW pump laser for terrestrial applications

Sept. 23, 2008
SEPTEMBER 23, 2008 -- 3S PHOTONICS, developer of 980-nm pump lasers for submarine and terrestrial applications, this week introduced a new ultra-high power cooled pump laser module for next-generation EDFAs and fiber laser systems.

SEPTEMBER 23, 2008 -- 3S PHOTONICS (search for 3S PHOTONICS), manufacturer of laser chips, optical discrete modules and components for telecommunication networks, today announced the launch of what it claims is the most powerful pump module available on the market.

3S PHOTONICS says it has leveraged its technological expertise in the submarine pump laser module market and releases an enhanced version of its most powerful 980-nm pump module series for terrestrial applications. The terrestrial pump delivers a 750-mW "kink-free" output power and will form the cornerstone for next-generation Erbium-Doped Fiber Amplifiers (EDFAs), say company representatives.

"This new 980-nm terrestrial pump is obviously powered by our in-house chip technology that has been fully qualified for submarine applications, ensuring an unparalleled level of performance and reliability," contends Yannick Bailly, vice president of marketing for 3S PHOTONICS.

The new Ultra-High Output Power Pump is the latest in the 1999 CHP pump module portfolio and incorporates 3S PHOTONICS' 1999 LCv2 laser chip, which was designed and produced internally and is fully qualified for submarine applications, thus exceeding Telcordia recommendations.

According to the company, key features of the product include:

• A maximum operating drive current of 1050 mA for a 680-mW operation power;
• Low profile hermetically sealed 14-pin butterfly package with polarization maintaining fiber (PMF) or standard singlemode fiber (SMF) pigtail;
• Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) stabilization;
• Multiple wavelength availability;
• Integrated Thermo-Electric Cooler (TEC), precision NTC thermistor, and back-facet monitor photodiode;
• Up to 750-mW kink-free fiber-coupled output power from â5 ° C to +75 ° C;
• High Polarization Extinction Ratio (PER);
• Full qualification in accordance with Telcordia GR-468-CORE specifications; and
• Field proven high reliability.

Applications include Low noise Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifiers (EDFAs), next-generation DWDM EDFAs, CATV applications, and fiber laser systems.

3S PHOTONICS will be exhibiting at ECOC 2008, held this week in the Brussels Expo Center, Belgium, in booth #411.
