RED-C launches UltraSpan family for ultra-long repeaterless links

Sept. 4, 2008
SEPTEMBER 4, 2008 -- The UltraSpan family of amplification equipment is designed to address the challenges of ultra-long repeaterless links and long spans within multi-span links and is especially suited for island-hopping, enterprise SAN, disaster recovery, and security-sensitive network applications.

SEPTEMBER 4, 2008 -- RED-C Optical Networks Ltd. (search for RED-C Optical Networks), provider of EDFAs, Raman amplifiers, and optical monitoring devices for all-optical network applications, today announced the launch of its UltraSpan product family, a portfolio of amplification equipment designed to address the challenges of ultra-long repeaterless links and long spans within multi-span links.

The UltraSpan products can be used individually or in any combination to extend the span reach of existing system designs, say company representatives. They support ultra-long point-to-point repeaterless links of up to 70 dB using standard transponders (corresponding to about 350 km) as well as long spans that are part of a multi-span network.

The UltraSpan portfolio is aimed at accommodating the growing need for applications such as island hopping, Enterprise Storage Area Networks (SANs), disaster recovery, and security sensitive networks.

According to RED-C, the UltraSpan product line comprises four complementary products:

• The UltraSpan Raman, which provides up to 1.2W of co- or counter-propagating Raman pump power;
• The UltraSpan Power Booster, which provides up to 26 dBm of launch power;
• The UltraSpan ROPA, which provides up to 1.2 W of combined counter-propagating Raman pump power and 1480-nm pump power for remote EDF pumping; and
• The UltraSpan Submarine Terminal, a modular EDFA/ Raman/ ROPA unit especially designed for stringent low FIT (very high reliability) network applications.

All UltraSpan products are available as network interfaced units that can be integrated easily and rapidly within existing system designs, say company representatives. All products include RED-C's patented laser safety technology for Class 1M classifications and feature standard, uniform GUI and operating procedures. The UltraSpan portfolio fully complies with Telecordia standards.

"Leveraging RED-C's proven expertise with EDFA and Raman technology, RED-C now offers the most comprehensive portfolio for addressing ultra-long spans, one of the most demanding challenges for network designers today," notes Yossi Boker, RED-C president and CEO. "The UltraSpan product line is an important milestone in RED-C's continued success in equipping system vendors with stateof-the-art solutions, essential for strengthening their competitive edge."
