8 January 2003 -- MPB Communications has recently added a patent to its intellectual property portfolio that reveals a method of multiple-order cascaded Raman pumping.
The Montreal-based company says it has proven that increasing the order of pumping decreases the amount of noise power delivered to the receiver. This is due to the fact that the Raman gain occurs at a greater distance from the receiving terminal.
The improved Optical Signal to Noise Ratio (OSNR) achieved by pumping with this method allows the SuperRaman to enhance fibre-optic system margins by as much as 2.5dB over the conventional first-order pumping architecture widely available on the market.
In addition to the advantage of noise improvement, this laser can be used for pumping all fibre types and is ideal for easily upgrading the bit-rate, number of channels or reach of existing link systems.
US patent number 6,480,326 covers the technology behind MPB's SuperRaman fibre laser for distributed Raman amplification. The rights to this design further strengthens the company's position as a leading manufacturer of top quality Telecommunications products.
