    Lucent Technologies (Murray Hill, NJ) has completed installation of what it touts as the world`s first optical mpeg-2 (Motion Picture Experts Group-2) digital television system in the Zhejiang province of the People`s Republic of China. The system includes a Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (sdh) fiber network, with central control residing in the provincial city of Hangzhou. The 2.5-Gbit/sec network contains 14 mpeg-2 Digital Video System units and more than 20 sdh multiplexers. It also uses atm transmission. Lucent also announced an agreement to build a similar network in Hainan province.
