mci Communications Corp., (Washington, DC) announced it will build two new routes on its high-speed telecommunications network using enhanced TrueWave fiber-optic cable from Lucent Technologies (Murray Hill, NJ). mci will deploy the fiber in routes between the cities of Wittmann, AZ, and Phoenix, AZ, and in Cleveland, OH. The new network facilities will be used to carry voice, data, and Internet traffic to both long-distance and local mci customers. mci plans to use wavelength-division multiplexing (wdm) on the new routes, which will enable mci to divide each circuit into 40 wavelengths, each operating at 40 Gbits/sec. Lucent designed the TrueWave fiber for long-distance networks that use wdm with optical amplifiers.
